I just watched this movie last night: John Carpenter's They Live. I can't believe I'd never even heard of the movie until last night! The plot involves aliens walking among us, pretending to be us, and recruiting the more spineless of us to help. It's a lot like reality, but way simpler and cheesier.
The short story this was based on was first published in 1963! Unbelievable! Ray Nelson knew what was going on. You can read the story, "Eight O'Clock in the Morning", here if you want. I'd reproduce it, correcting all the typos, but I'm pretty sure that's illegal.
Universal Studios is apparently working on a remake, so see the original first here, and then wait for the new version. Hopefully, the new version will be more like the short story, but I doubt it. Some gadget (like sunglasses) that lets you see things clearly is much easier for people to handle than the idea of achieving a higher consciousness without any technological aid. It's actually much less dangerous that way too, which is good. We don't want people running around killing each other! (Any more than they already are, of course.)
